Are you an aspiring Head of Department or looking to move into Middle Leadership, if so please read on…this resource is an actual letter for a theoretical role.
Based on the success of my Exemplar Deputy Head/Head letter, I have written a letter for aspiring MIddle Leaders. The one side of A4 letter provides an exemplar letter for such a role; it provides all the buzz words and sentences from which you can develop your own narrative and it provides a structure to your letter that will make it stand out from the crowd.

The IBP as this is a great way to monitor and support individual student behaviour.
Using appropriate language when dealing with student behaviour
All of my packs have been written for class work and 1-1 situations and have been used widely in the provision where I was a Head; with proven results.
A bank of statements that can be added to a spreadsheet or Tracking Document, that identify a range of Behaviour, Behaviour for Learning and Emotional Targets that can be used to track student behaviour in any educational provision.
Are you interviewing for Pastoral Posts within your school or beyond? This grid of questions identifies key areas of focus for the role and desired responses from your candidates - an ideal companion for non teaching pastoral posts, or indeed those of a more senior nature.
An Extensive Questionnaire (22 Questions) that can be used for self evaluation within the LSA/TA Support teams or as part of wider school/staff evaluation that informs the school development plan or gives feedback to Senior/Middle Leadership.
Are you looking to interview for your new Senior Leaders or Assistant Heads and Deputies?
If so, this resource will provide a range of tasks that can be administered for these interviews and give you a range of feedback to help you choose the best candidate for the role.
I have used each of these tasks for SLT interviews in Special Education and they had proved invaluable.
As a bonus I have also added a wide ranging number of interview questions that I feel sure you will find useful.
Are you looking to review job descriptions or to re-define the role of your Tutor Teams? This resource identifies in full what are considered the key roles for the Form Tutor on a day-to day basis. This resource can be used by member of SLT to reinforce, or indeed re-invent the expectations for form tutors in your establishment.
I originally wrote this for my school as the Tutor Period was re-introduced and it identified the guidance as to the expectations for the new role.
This resource consists of a presentation that I wrote and delivered on Differentiation for staff training. The slides explain clearly what differentiation is, how it links to effective learning for all students and the keys ways to differentiate in the classroom. The presentation can be paused at regular intervals so that staff can discuss the points raised.
It formed part of a whole morning training session and so what would be required after the delivery of the Power Point, is an opportunity for colleagues to explore the process of differentiation/ideas in their subject or departmental teams.
Are you a new headteacher or longstanding one, who needs to review practice in their school/provision?
The following 7 page audit designed in diagrammatic format, asks questions of the practice undertaken in your provision so that you and your Leadership Team can reflect and review the current position of the areas identified…those areas for the purpose of this document are:
Curriculum and curriculum development
Teaching, learning and assessment
Behaviour management
Staffing
Site and resources
Other considerations - like staff and student voice/extra curricular etc.
This is an authentic document that I wrote to help identify my initial priorities as I moved into a new position as head of a special school.
Save valuable time when writing your reports
Are you a teacher or Senior leader who wants to write excellent, personalised reports but also want to save some of your valuable time?
This resource contains many exemplar paragraphs and sentences, that can be modified and adapted to add to any style of student mid term/end of term reports; they have originally been written for students in Special Education and some of them link to personalised targets, however much of the resource can be used by colleagues in all types of educational establishment.
Getting the Thoughts of Your Students is important for ‘Whole School Development’.
This is a 20 question survey encompassing all aspects of school life.
I wrote and distributed this survey at the end of a term, where a new Behaviour and Teaching and Learning policy was introduced. The feedback was invaluable to help us assess how well these policies had started to be embedded; a similar survey was also distributed to the staff.
This letter template is based on my previously well used Headteacher letter template that I used for applying for HT jobs; this one is specifically focused on roles for Headteacher/SLT positions in Special Education and Alternative Provision and gives examples of the kind of evidence you may need to provide that helps to catch the eye of prospective employers.
I did indeed get an interview using this letter and ultimately got the job, which was my last substantive post before retirement.
This is a ‘Bullying Policy’ that I had previously written for my Special School, where it was proven into guiding staff into making decisions around bullying incidents. It aims to give a comprehensive definition in real terms as to the kind of bullying that may be experienced by students in any educational provision.
We all require a good template at times to showcase key data. This resource identifies key areas of data relating to individual student behaviour that can be used to present key findings to a Line Manager, school Governors or indeed OfSTED. It can be tweeked to suit the kind of data required and the way in which behaviour is tracked in your school.
This is Part 1 of 3 Behaviour Support Programmes.
The BSP 1 is a module of work that can be used with students who are unable to demonstrate effective social skills and frequently allow their emotions to get the better of them, often demonstrating bouts of anger and increased emotion. The module is best suited to be delivered by a Mentor or Behaviour Coach in a 1-1 or small group environment.
It consists of between 4-6 lessons and contains all appropriate worksheets and lesson guidance.
Student attendance continues to come under scrutiny since the Covid Pandemic.
The Tracking and Monitoring attendance package contains the appropriate monitoring tools and associated resources/letters/templates to effectively track student attendance in any school. Alongside the resources are appropriate letters that align to different stages of the tracking and an overall monitoring chart to be used by the attendance officer, to track referrals and cases which require additional follow up. In addition I have added monthly Red/Amber/Green Letters which are an additional monthly resource to inform parents of their students attendance and how it aligns to school expectations.
I have also added a template that helps staff to identify historical attendance and exemplar narrative to help you use the appropriate language used by monitoring agencies.
I have used this bundle of tools to track attendance in all of my roles in the past 6 years and it has proved very effective and easy to use.
Updated to include…the individual student Action Plan and a tracking document aimed at evidencing actions taken to support improvement in attendance across the school - for the complete package for improving attendance see the resource called Strategic Improvement of School Attendance.
The Attendance Support Plan Template can be used as a higher level intervention, to support improvements in student attendance and to identify key attendance data that can be used with parents and the child, so that what is required for improvement, is shared by all and is represented in one clear document.
The Learning Diary is a booklet that can be used for students to record evidence of their learning that takes place outside of the classroom environment.
This bullying resource includes:
An initiative that can be used to tackle bullying in school - bullying levels.
A bullying contract that can be used with students who are frequent bullies
An exemplar letter that can be sent to parents to help with paper trail regarding any bullying incident
The bullying levels are used to help discourage bullying in school alongside appropriate consequences for those who do bully. For students who are frequent bullies, there is a bullying contract that can be used to further discourage this kind of behaviour and this could be used in conjunction with a parental meeting.
Alongside this is an exemplar of a bullying letter that can be sent to parents.
